Adventures in Lawnmowing

Apparently I have earned a new nickname from Uhu. Saucy. Nice variation on the sassafrass theme, actually.

Nice, gentle start to the week. My walking buddy cancelled last minute and although I *should* have gotten up and walked/jogged anyway, I rolled over and dozed for another hour. Could be due to the slight stiffness I was feeling after my shift last night. Oh well, tomorrow's another morning and we meet at 7!

Probably would a teensy bit more with it had I gotten my lazy butt up, but the day began and I drank my tea and woke up eventually. Enough to do today to make me feel competent as well as help the time pass till my early departure.

Loved having an extra few hours in the afternoon to putz around (read= surf, laundry, I always need a few projects on the go at once), clean up the yard in preparation for mowing it. And I had every intention! Alas, the powers that be were not cooperating cause when I went to the garage to get the lawnmower, it was nowhere to be seen!

Alas indeed. Upon returning from soccer practice and smelling that sweet sweet smell wafting from the garage next door, I of course followed my nose (it always knows) and found a gaggle of neighbourly neighbours in the midsts of a friendly game of poker in said garage.

Not only did I find the mower, but a friendly (might just have discovered a new elf!) soul who volunteered to show me how to use the damn thing. Yes, the very one who does her nails on the eve of going camping has never mowed a lawn. Shocked? I didn't think so.

Now THAT was fun. And quite a good workout. May just have burned more calories than I did during soccer practice. Plus, I have the funkiest looking lawn on the block ~ somehow ended up doing a triangular pattern...Hee hee. Feeling quite satisfied and competent (have to share moods verbally as poor unky doesn't seem to be operational at the moment) and quenched after my two ciders. I'm perhaps ready to head to bed sometime soon. Mmm. Bed. Like now? G'night.

Two weddings and a magic carpet ride

Don't you hate it when you have brushed your teeth and then have uncontrollable chocolate/ice cream cravings? I said to hell with it and had myself a handful of chocolate chips and a vanilla pudding pop. Currently munching my way through a bowl of strawberries, garnish I lifted from dessert trays at the wedding tonight. Oh well, I can always brush them again!

It has been a fucking awesome long weekend. Kat & I got the party started Thursday night out on the town. Unfortunately the line & cover they were still charging after midnight at my friends show discouraged us from hanging out there. We took a leap and landed on a magic carpet ride of an adventure, flirting on the verge of caution being thrown to the wind. How I love this woman, still up with me at 6 am, giggling, eating chinese food.

Friday was my internet radio oddesey, as chronicled in the last post. Then began my weekend wedding extravaganza. I actually got to be a guest at one yesterday, then worked one tonight. The difference between the two was like night & day. Becky (nickname) and her farmer tied the knot in a small country church, with about 50 people in attendance. They caught a ride in a big red firetruck to the hall, where the Lion's Club catered us our Hawaiian themed feast and cheerfully served home mixed mai tais (so strong the little umbrellas practically stood up by themselves). I cried twice, the moment I saw her come into the church (and intermittedly thoughout the ceremony) then at the reception as one of her bridesmaids toasted her. She does deserve to be toasted, and celebrated and loved and cherished and all of those good things. After seing her glow with pure joy all day long and the meeting of her ~gulp~ husband for the first time yesterday, I believe firmly that this exactly the man for the job.

Today's affair was a plated dinner for 150, the party after the party they held yesterday at the bride's parents mansion. The sup. worded it best, mentioning that most of the guests were just hanging around out of politeness. A big show to impress what appeared to be business associates of the older generation. More concerned with the asthetics, they missed the point completely, that a wedding is supposed to be a celebration of love.

There, I have said my piece. Missed the cake (it probably tasted like plastic, anyway). I much preferred the macadamia nut brownie torte baked with much love by my dear friend's brand new father-in-law. And man, can he cut a rug!

I'm surrounded by holidayness

Happy happy holiday weekend to both sides of the border! I'm sure I could find out with what frequency that happens fairly easily but I'm too lazy to google.

Had a fantastically lazy day (with the exception of the bike ride to & from sistas to suck more water out of her basement for a few hours). A 3 hour nap when I got home! Still a little groggy, I have been having me some lounging/surfing fun, uploading more of the camping pics to Flickr, and exploring the wickedness of world wide radio broadcasts. SO nice to have some new music to listen to (internet love) and I'm excited about ~eventually~ setting up my itunes situation here at the crib.

Some of the stations I hit tonight on live365.com:

the bassment.com ~ Underground Hip Hop Radio, New Songs, Classics, Unreleased, Live Mixshows, Move
WA electronic ~ dancefloor orientated DnB from an Australian perspective
Utopia Vibes ~ Downbeat, Jazz, Trip-Hop, Lounge lovers
Creation Steppin ~ classic and modern roots reggae
Soulgood / Streetlevel ~ Tribal & Funky House. UK Garage. From South Australia.

Quite the mix!

As my wishlist grows, I'm anticipating a nice beats filled Summer...

Do me a favor and go out and shake your booties for me? At least once in the next 3 days. For me ;)

What we are coming to know

The Invitation

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living, I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring with your moon. I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals, or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain, mine or your own without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or even your own; if you can dance with the wilderness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning your self to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being a human.
It doesn’t interest me if the story you’re telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty even if every day is not pretty, and if you can source you life from its presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, ‘YES!!’
It doesn’t interest me where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children. It doesn’t matter to me who you are or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back. It doesn’t interest me where or with whom you studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

switched to the Chard

just as the White Rabbit paid us a visit!

How kind of him to sit and chat for a spell, as his size 12 shoes waited paitiently for his departure.

Coincidentally, "Off with their heads!" was not to be heard.

Alice picks up her flamingo, and continues her game of croquet.

Shot # 2

Is going down much smoother, thanks to a little apple juice & cran raspberry fizzyness. :) :)

Why, Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, welcome to the tea party!

Ziiiing

That may just have been my first AND last ever shot of Absinthe. I think my esophagus is on fire...

Glenda the Good Witch came home!

Feels a little bit like fairy tale fantasy magic kingdoms and secret passages around here lately. I feel like the Cheshire Cat. And I haven't even tried any of the Absinthe Uhu brought home. It seems the poor kids were in a bit of a fender bender this aft.

Back to the title (and kind of the point) of this post: she has blown in on the fresh mountain breeze and instantly brought joy and energy into this home again.

And, she brought me a piece of the most heavenly home *home* made kaesekuchen (like, he even made the quark himself)baked by no other than her father. Love love!

by Lewis Caroll

Jabberwocky

'Twas brilling, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogroves
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite the jaws that cach!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious bandersnach!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the tumtum tree,
And stood a while in thought.

And in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame
Came whiffling through the tulgy wood,
And burbled as it came.

One,two! One,two! And through and through
The vorpal blade whent sniker-snack
He left it dead and with it's head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the jabberwock?
Come to my arms my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brilling, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogroves
And the mome raths outgrabe.

guten abend, liebe zimmergenossen (ich vermisse dich!)

Hi Honey,

Not sure when you'll get a chance to check your mail, but I just wanted to say hi and let you know how much you ARE MISSED!!!

We have very very very good news and reason to celebrate LOTS, it appears that (finally) a one Gil Gilbertson has left the building. YIPEE YAI KAI EH!! Fuckin eh. :) ~ I just heard you may know this interesting tidbit of information through a txt msg from Uhu and kitten (newly anointed nickname for Whit) ;P ~

I hope you are having a fabulous time on your camping adventure, that you somehow fixed your air mattress or found someone soft (yet firm in the right places *wink wink nudge nudge*) to sleep on.

Gosh, I'm funny on a hangover and paint fumes. This afternoon was spent helping Kim paint the bedrooms of the house she and her family are moving into this week. We spent some time at the paint store (where much inspiration is to be had!) and picked a lovely sunny yellow for the playroom called 'Afternoon Delight'. 'Spiced Rum' is going in their bedroom- she wanted one called Nutmeg but her other paint store was closed today and that was the closest match. The hardwood is all getting redone tomorrow; it's going to look fantastic when it's done.

*In other news* Jeez you've missed a lot in 3 days!! We lost our soccer game 1-0. Oh well, we tried hard, had fun, it didn't rain. Worked a steak/lobster thingie for 350, my what a pain in the ass to clear. Did reap (or shall we say 'harvest'?) some benefit- some nice material for eine kleine geschmacksprobe vom feinsten. Proesterchen, meine Grasshopper.

Love you, so much, hope you are taking care of yourself. I am taking good care of our pad (all plants got watered and floors swept/mopped today) in your absence. Off to deal with that mountain (the situation has escalated) of clothes taking over my bedroom floor.

Big kisses and hugs,

Sass aka deine Biene

Wii=ne tasting timmme!

Hey hi hello it's me!
I've gotten a little giggly/bleary eyed after my function tonight/ :)
Done a right good job & 'aquired' me some open bottle 'o vino and so all the better to conduct our first official urban wine tasting with. Cheers!

The first candidate is an old Emerald favorite. 2003 Hawthorne Mountain Gewuertztraminer. This, my dear IIF, is one of my favorites. I have a fondness for both Okanogan AND Gewuertztraminer wines, so it's kind of a no-brainer here. Love the Double Whammies. A surprising twinge of butter on top of that lovely sweet spicy tendency. Mmm. A very summery patio type of drinkage action.

Next we have a 2002 Glazebrook Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. I found this one to be a tantalizing tropical delight, making my taste buds dance (along with tunes that the very cute dj was spinning).

The final representant of the whites, a Louis Latour Chardonnay. Never one to dissapoint, Louis brings forth a solid effort in his candidacy (although I must admit, Chards are not among my favs). Pleasing to my palate, it would be a nice accompaniment to a chicken dish, perhaps with a cream based sauce.

Sauce, did someone say Saucy??. (this obviously refering to the term used by the security guy as I surreptitiously load up a case of six bottles to take home).

Ahem. Back to the *VRY SCIENTIFIC* wine tasting currently taking place. Hic!

A red. To finish us off (and quite literally, too).
Wynns Coonawarra Estate, Cabernet Shiraz Merlot, 2002. Never one to judge a blend, find this one a little bit on the tart side. However, am still persuaded to enjoy the nice mix of the triple treat. Definitely enjoyable.

And thus we come to the end of this, our first ever online wine tasting experience. Goodnight!

TGIF (already/what took so long?)

Ahhhhhh.

That's the sound of the sassafrass exhaling after a super crazy busy rollercoaster yet oddly entertaining week. I embrace the weekend with arms wide open. I knew I was in trouble when I started talking to insects. My kitty Kat has only been gone 1 night and already I'm losing it.

To my defense, it was a Biene (english=bee), which just happens to be my new nickname. Hers is Grasshopper. But you'll find this out soon, as soon as I get her sweetcheek-german-tour-guide-ass to submit her guest post (this one's worth waiting for, folks). I was speaking to the little creature as I ushered him out of the living room, held temporarily captive in a pint glass with an envelope accross the bottom.

Luckily, Uhu sprung to the rescue. We're gonna cook us some salmon and drink us some wine (I'm in charge of the salad). Let the weeks events and adventures settle a little, like those little flakes in a snowglobe.

Meanwhile, for your viewing pleasure, my newly created slide show (over at Flickr). Quite proud of myself for figuring this one out so quick (pats on back). Not bad for someone who took a couple months of programming 5 years back. Not quite as proud as I am of myself for going for a jog before work 4 mornings this week. I may be able to keep up with those little *&ckers on the other team out on the field before this summer is through!

unedited ttd June 2005

-> all those things that I was supposed to do before my 31st B day
-> Get german passport renewed
-> Get class (whatever it is) to drive one of those 15 passenger vans
-> Sell speakers and receiver (barganfinder?)

Hmmm...... I just happened to (yeah right) open up to this page. It's June 21st and well, I better get my ass in gear if I want to accomplish even a portion of the above listed things. Oh well, wash one plate at a time, right?

I am currently laying on my bankie (Shut Up! You have one too!) under the shade of a beautiful tree (sorry, can't name it) with my 'essentials' laid out before me. Half a bottle of my dad's finest homemade red (I told you he gave great doggy bags!), water, rye crisp bread, discman, a few good CD's, a journal and a pen. With a picture of some real estate lady I have never heard of on it. Hm. More drunken lapses, perhaps? Nevermind. All toted here in a green cotton reusable bag, with a butterfly and flowers on the side. That beside my discarded Birks (more on them later) - sometimes I truly believe I was meant to be a hippie. Or was one in a past life, maybe?

Beautiful evening, this evening. And the Solstice. It would seem Mother Nature has blessed us. Given us a reprieve after the torrential rain (like none we've seen in oh, 1 or 2 hundred years) which continuously poured down on us over the past two and a half weeks. It's so wonderful to finally enjoy a beautiful summer day. And I'm exactly where I want to be. How lucky is that?

I am going to pack up soon and enjoy a bike ride around the park. The people (which succumbed to butterfly and then to bunny) watching has been a real treat. Especially the bunny- brown with a white peter cotton tail, munch munch munching on the green green grass. I managed to slow down the spinning axis of my globe for awhile to simply breathe, and be. But I will not leave you without this:

Ode to my Birkenstocks

How fitting on the first day of summer to don my absolute favorite pair of Sandals. Have them fit like a second skin, the green leather worn so soft, the bottoms walked bare. How many miles have I journeyed in these German wundershoes? If these babies could talk, the stories they'd tell, of Italy, Turkey, Paris and Prague! Over here as well- through rivers, lakes, folk fests and countless dog walks.

I did not get one blister wearing them all day. In fact, I think they may have healed a few of the other ones I have received by trying to wear unfortunate unmentionable others. Well, I think I have fully expressed my point here. I LOVE THESE SHOES. Like a child.

Thanks for your attention! You may now carry on with your summers.

S*&^ F$#(

Don't tell me I just did that.

Wrote for oh, about 45 minutes and then...

BAM!

It's gone.

Be back after my cold shower.

Here, go listen to this

Weekend Observations

Angelina and Brad have the most amazing onscreen chemistry since… the black and white days. Uhu is great fun to go to the movies with (complaining loudly right after it was over “I want my money back, there wasn’t enough naked Brad!!”).

It is entirely worth the effort to make oneself an egg-turkeybacon-cheese-and-tomato on whole grain for breakfast (Saturday).

It’s much more fun to go sit on a sunny patio and have it made and served to you (Sunday).

My dad is the best cook ever (but we knew this already). Just don’t try and reheat the escargots in the microwave- they tend to explode and make a really big mess.

Your roommate DOES worry about you if you don’t come home (and no, honey, I wasn’t trying to punish you or teach you a lesson. I will call from now on!)

5 grown woman and one medium sized dog WILL fit into a king sized bed (and sleep comfortably) when enough alcohol has been consumed.

The worst sound to have to endure while hung over is a shop vac. My poor sister’s basement flooded and we spent most of Sunday afternoon mopping and sucking the water up.

Calling your (recent) ex bf and wishing him happy father’s day may induce shock/panic. Ooops! Didn’t mean it THAT way. Hee hee.

What I did on spring vacation by SG

Campbell River View

I reached three 'corners' of the island on my recent trip there (surfin' safari). It was an absolutely incredible trip, and sometimes feels like a dream that *maybe* didn't even happen. There were 24 girls, mostly from my soccer team (go, Stingers! We won 5-4 tonight. NO rain!), a gaggle of gorgeous flight attendants, and friends of the two women in the group turning 30. We had an absolute blast (how can you not when you get that much estrogen flowing AND have to get in and out of head to toe wetsuits?) taking over a beautiful (normally quieter, I'm sure) lodge right on the ocean. I had forgotten what a powerful force that mindboggingly humungous body of water the Pacific is to reckon with. How quickly I remembered, when I wigged out at Horseshoe Bay just as we were to be getting on the Ferry (don't like big boats and water I can't see the bottom of). However, by the third Ferry trip I was at ease again- just don't make me look over the side, please!

It works!

KatSanBirch

Be forewarned, kiddies. It's like a kid with a new toy!!
Well, this is me and my Kat at mom's neighbours. It's funny that I'm hugging her and the tree- we spoke about a week later about the special powers of birches. Holdin' on for dear life! But we'll get through it, I guarantee nobody's gonna drown. :) :)

Guess who?

The singing lawyer came for dinner tonight. It was a reunion of sorts, as Kat was there too. Us, six months later, wow! It was also an introduction of sorts, as Uhu joined our urban clan as of yesterday. How *handy* that we had a bottle of bubbly on hand to celebrate the occasion. When you are moving in the right direction you have the all of the energy of the universe behind you.

Each contributed to the feast in his or her own special way. I picked the groceries up and got to show off my rusty hausfrau cooking skills, SL brought the wine (How he knew it was our favorite kind-Masi- I will never know). K picked up berries and J brought the whip (So HOT), mmmmm - Perfection. How lucky am I to be surrounded with so much love.

An evening filled with good eats, a special premiere viewing of *The White Swan Adventure*, and a little ball handling practice with my brand spankin new orange and silver soccer ball in the living room... Life is good.

ouch my heart?

ouch ouch ouch my ... oh, don't even go there. That's what advil and massage therapists named Butt are for. I'm officially, done, finished, completed my first tournament of the year. With 500 buckeroos in my pocket, it's *almost* worth the effort. My body's none too pleased with me, but ~insert 2nd sentence here~ . 1 down, 4 to go!

Just wondering, has anyone had the experience of being uninvited to an event? I wonder. Because I just have been. It's a rather awkward thing, really. But then perhaps (and in accordance with my 'everything happens for a reason' belief') it's less awkward than attending said event. Understandable, when one considers the circumstances that have been altered in recent weeks. Hmm. One to ponder.

Wow- the night has just flown by. Off to bed, little one. Let the night's wings envelop you and take you to super rejuvinating sleepland (with a few good dreams thrown in there for good measure). Guten nacht. Montag morgen kommt viel zu frueh!

Samstag, Juni 11, 2005

Ouch my feet. It's just after midnight and I have *just* managed to finally put my fleecy boxer robe and slippers on. Long day, and tomorrow will be more of the same. Welcome to my summer! 1002 stairs again (I really like that number!) this morning, then half a day in my office life and the other half as a penguin. Don't get me wrong, I really do love my catering gig. Especially the bonuses a couple of years seniority will bring you (treats galore- tonight it was seashells and little blue and orange flowers from dismantled lai's - it was a grade 9 grad with a Hawaiian theme). How I appreciate being fed and catching up with old friends (this will be my 5th year helping out). And tonight brought the added gift of my favorite companion in all things fun, Kat. Who, coincidentally is currently composing a guest post all about our camping *trip* last weekend. I truly am blessed to have this goddess of a woman in my life, to be my mirror (as well as my reed- see last post) AND roomie. Swoon.

Bed is calling (yes, I hear you bed, just a sec!) Nighty night.

on the good ship Friendship

“To be today friendly and tomorrow unfriendly cannot for one moment be called friendship; the value of friendship is in its constancy. Forbearance, patience, and tolerance are the only conditions which keep two individual hearts united. There is a saying in Hindustani, by Seman, on friendship, 'Stand by your friend in his time of need, like the reed on the bank of the river.' When a man is sinking in the water and catches hold of a reed, it will save him if it is strong; and if not, it will sink along with him.”

jeckyll/hyde

A hump day, in a galaxy far far away. It's Wednesday and I'm in a very dark place. My mood started to take a downward spiral sometime after lunch. Sure, it was partly due to the hangover which nastily crept up on me from behind (and to which the double dose of ibuprofin barely made a dent). But this is something sadly familiar to me. Recurring state of hopelessness and despair. A negative, big black cloud over my head kind of place where I don't like anything or anybody. Why would anyone choose to feel this way? Asks the wise one. And proceeds to diagnose a classic case of chemical imbalance- take a pill, make it better. Yeah, 'cept been there done that shit. Don't wanna go there again. But I sure as hell don't want to stay here either. Hm. Dilemma.

I want to believe the studies that have been done linking exercise to a good, stable, sunny disposition. That IS who I am 'normally'. I am definitely not feeling normal, and the people closest to me are suffering greatly (so sorry, J) because of it. The wise one gave me a name and # to call, to pursue a little one on one. I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm willing to go the excersise route as well. Double Whammy. My depression won't know what hit it. Time to feel better, sassy girl. Take that curly haired little girl and hug her tight. Don't let go. Ever.

Update: (focus on 'UP')... 1002 stairs later, I am feeling marginally better. The sun is *trying* to shine, the birds are singing. Prospects on the horizon. Hanging in there.

traffic / escape

Well, thanks Therese, for all the traffic! (And sorry that I'm too lazy to put in your accents...)

I finally attached one of those blog counter things, and it's quite amusing to see who stops by and from where! Once I have a longer list of search results that lead people here, I'll post it. My favorite so far is "Helmut Sass"- whatever the heck that is. Anyone know? I also recently re-organized and updated my links to other blogs on the sidebar... and found a few more I plan to re-visit:

Kristy, Zoe & Rhonda, thanks for the giggles/inspiration!

My Kat and I are off camping/soul searching the next couple of days. It will be so good to escape the city and get some hard core hiking in. Little does my poor roomie know, I 'm a soft core camper... Wish us luck!

Interview Questions for Therese

Questions for Therese:

1. What was your first kiss like?
2. If a hobby could make you money, what would you be doing?
3. If you had to choose only 5 foods to eat for a year (don’t worry about maintaining a balanced diet) what would you choose?
4. If you decided to live abroad, which country would you choose?
5. How would you title your memoirs?

Raspberry and Brea, I'm still waiting for your answers chickies!

partee in the garden, yo!

e-vite is such a fun way to plan a party. People write their RSVPs, and everyone else can read them. I had one friend call me to say she recognized a name on the list and was that the same girl who stayed with her cousins in Australia last year? Why yes, it is! Small world.
I had a fairly successful shopping trip Friday night in preparation for Saturday’s events. My favorite item was a stack of paper plates that all looked like heads different animals. There were monkeys, lions, pandas, elephants, …And I had a couple of angels come to my rescue as I was quickly running out of time (and patience) Sat morning- they returned all the empty bottles and came back with all of the things on the shopping list I had forgotten. And then some! We have enough s’more making materials to last us till Summer 2007!! Another fun thing about e-vite is that you can suggest to people what to bring. Since my party had a garden theme, I put all things garden related on it (sprinkler, hose, shears, birdhouse, fertilizer, supersoaker). My sister signed up to bring the Hoe (of course), and I got all kinds of little plants and seeds, as well as some very cute gardening gloves. Which I promptly put to good use on Sunday to start digging. No, my garden had not yet been dug. That’s this week’s after work project. Until it rains, then we’re having mud wrestling competitions.

Good Hump Day to You

The day after my birthday always feels a little like Boxing Day. Recovering from certain overindulgences, always a little let down after the anticipation leading up to the Big Day. But since my party is on Saturday, I have even more to look forward to before this whole birthday thing is over for this year. Plus, I had an absolutely wonderful day with my mommy dearest showing up to take me out for lunch AND bring a deliciously sinful chocolate cake, as well as a beautiful bouquet of flowers being delivered to my desk. A tied soccer game and a perfectly prepared cheesy omelet completed the day.

Wednesdays have always been all right, in my books. Over the hump and slide tackling towards the weekend. I have an acupuncture appointment later on (yet another attempt to quell the allergic reactions which have plagued me over the past few weeks). And then a quiet hour or two with a new book? Unless my roommate returns home from her long weekend camping extravaganza. Then we’ll be having us some wine drinkin’ leg waxin’ catching up to do.

31 things

I was thinking about trying out 28 again, staying there for awhile, but eh- with age comes wisdom, right?

By accepting my age with grace, I also get to add three things to my list: 31 things about me.

Here goes:

1. I lived on a farm in Quebec till age 5, and according to pictures (and some hilarious home movies) spent the majority of the time roaming around naked with sister Barb and cousin Carina. Hardly ever saw/knew about traffic, airplanes, etc.

2. I visited that very farm for the first time since moving away two Septembers ago, as part of a cross country odyssey with Louise, my partner in crime. Just about smack in the middle of 5 and 6,000 kms we drove the beast to that beautiful potato laden red isle out east.

3. I got to visit the absolute furthest possible point west in Canada from there just a few weeks ago on a surfing trip.

4. I believe in trying things you have never done before (especially if it scares you) every once in awhile. Take surfing, for example. Well, body surfing in my case ;)

5. I have one big unexplainable irrational fear: deep water that I can’t see the bottom of. Nope, can’t say I like boats much and if I ever won a cruise, I’d have to send my mom instead.

6. I have never been to Vegas

7. I have been in love 2.5 times (if you don’t count the at-first-sight infatuation with one Sean Robinson at age 12 ½).

8. I love to bake and cook, although I rarely follow a recipe accurately and tend to throw in anything and everything I can find around the kitchen (new taste sensations!). I also will hardly ever try a soup/sauce until I’m done making it.

9. Wine is a big passion that I intend to follow through with a Sommelier course in early 2006.

10. I have experienced a handful of nights where a few hours ‘go missing’ as the after effects of consuming too much of the red in too short a time period.

11. I absolutely love fresh flowers. If I could afford it, I would have a bunch around my home & desk at work at all times.

12. Amsterdam is my favorite city in the whole world. I think everyone should have the chance to visit it once in their lifetimes.

13. I am only superstitious about black cats and walking under ladders.

14. I love hip hop (and reggae) and used to ride my bike through a shady part of Munich to go dance to it by myself at a nightclub that played it on Friday nights. One night when I resurfaced to go home, I found that said bike had been stolen. By some miracle, I had enough change to catch a cab back home.

15. The only time I have ever thought about killing myself was on a trip to Turkey in 1996.

16. My mom and I were visiting Malta at the same time as ‘Gladiator’ was being filmed there.

17. J’ai passé tout mes années a l’école dans un programme bilingue. J’aimerai bien etre capable de parler comme avant.

18. My most memorable ‘trip’ to a museum was in Paris to see Monet and co. I twisted my ankle walking in (too busy reading the brochure to look down, missed a step). Ended up getting callused thumbs rolling myself around in a wheelchair, all for the sake of Art!

19. Volunteered in the following races:
Cross Calgary Marathon
24 hours of Adrenaline in Canmore
Parkinsons Super Walk, Fish Creek Park

20. I have never bungee jumped, parachuted, been tattooed or pierced anything other than my earlobes.

21. I had my first orgasm at age 24. Have been playing catch up ever since!

22. As a teenager, I adored George Michael, River Phoenix, Robert Downey, Jr. and Johnny Depp (who remembers 21 Jump Street?)

23. I am a Gemini Tiger and believe I match a few of the qualities of each.

24. I believe in the power of crystals.

25. I tend to have bad dreams if I watch anything violent on tv just before going to bed.

26. I haven’t watched more than an hour or two if tv a month in the past 3 or 4 years.

27. I met my best friend in Grade 6 while we were both attending Westgate Elementary. She and her husband have very recently purchased a home right down the block from it.

28. I stopped eating red meat 17 years ago. The only exception I make is at my dad’s house two or three times a year (especially for his moose sauerbraten mmmmm)

29. Ich habe fast neun Jahre lang in Deutschland gelebt, verheiratet und alleine (manchmal sogar gleichseitig!)

30. The mountains, my hammock, the movie theater, the highway, the hot springs and the beach are a few of my favorite places to frequent.

31. Every year I get wiser and a little closer to figuring out (and achieving) my goals to live out the ideal life for myself…

yes, I know there's one extra line in the bday song

it's cause I'm *eeek* 31 now...

note to self:

Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday dear Sassafrass
Happy Birthday to me

That is all.

Interview Questions

OK, I’m lazy and I copied questions from 2 Hot Chicks
But they’re really good questions! Here you go, girls:

For Brea :

1. Describe yourself using one word for each letter of the alphabet.

2. What’s the most fun you’ve ever had with your clothes on?

3. Describe what’s on tonight’s dinner menu if food is you and your personality.

4. A mad billionaire scientist offers you $500,000 if you will gain 25 pounds. The only catch … not only do you have to gain the weight, you also have to hang on to it for at least 5 years. If you fail, you have to give all the money back (with interest). What would you do?

5. What do you want for breakfast, and how do you take your coffee?

For Raspberry :

1. you’ve been transformed into a man. You will only stay this way for 24 hours. What do you plan to do? What do you hope to learn?

2. What’s the most generous thing someone has ever done for you? What about it was meaningful?

3. You notice three people standing before you. One is your son when he’s a 21-year old man. The second is your mother when she was pregnant with you. The third is yourself when you were 12 years old. You are allowed to say a few words to each of them before they vanish. What do you say?

4. How long do you have to know a guy before you feel okay about farting around him? Explain.

5. You see before you three unusual cocktails.~ The first is a Potion of Love. If you drink it, you will meet your perfect match, fall blissfully in love, and live happily ever after.~ The second is a Potion of Success. If you drink it, you will be extremely successful in your chosen vocation and earn the admiration, respect, and sometimes envy, of your colleagues.~ The third is a Potion of Wisdom. If you drink it, you will feel at peace throughout your life, regardless of the difficulties you face. Irrational feelings of doubt and fear will be a thing of the past.Which potion will you drink? Why?

It's interview time!

Blog-A-Thon Instructions:
It will be my pleasure to interview the next however many people respond to this post who want to be interviewed.

Here’s how it works:

1. Leave a comment saying "interview me" if you’d like to be interviewed.
2. I’ll respond by asking you 5 questions here. They’ll be different than the ones I was asked.
3. Update your blog with your answers to the questions.
4. When you do so, include this same explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same manner.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you’ll ask them five new questions.

Welcome to the World, David Andrew!

Born at 12:05 a.m. on 05/05/05, 5 lbs, 11 oz.

Horray!

#1

I have to agree with Omni on this one, definitely the artist gift.
I love to create and be creative, and it would be cool to be able to do it well.
I kind of hesitated at the beginning when I read this question, as none of the fame of the other occupations really appealed to me. I would like to live somewhere close to nature and just do my thing. And leave the novel writing up to DJW. *wink*
Simple as that.

Mittwoch, April 20, 2005

the answer to #1 is gonna have to wait...

'cause I'M GOING SURFING!!!

Here's the question, in case anyone else would like to ponder it:

1. Your Fairy Love Goddess graces you with a magical swat on the rump with the Little Red Riding Crop and you suddenly have one singularly exquisite talent.
Choose from the following:

You develop a set of pipes that elevate you to SupremeHot Chik of all Hot Diva Chiks.

You write a novel that makes James Joyce crawl from the grave to bow at your feet.

You become the greatest thing to happen to the dance world since Michael Flatley.

You create physical works of art that set all the hottest galleries in an all-outbiting-scratching-hair-pulling war over you.

You grace the stage with stirring dramatic performances that leave devoted audiences breathless with each and every flawless locution.

Which talent do you choose and why?

See y'all in May

Stay Sassy

# 3 & # 2

3. Every woman has a piece of jewelry that doesn’t have a high market value, but it’s priceless to her. What piece of jewelry is yours? Why?

I don’t really have a whole lot of jewelry, period. I bought myself some diamond stud earrings for my birthday the year I left my husband- I almost always have them in. The piece that means the most to me is a silver ring with a little green stone, which my friend Sylvia gave me. Sylvia and I met in Turkish class my second year in Germany. I had gone to a special 3D ultrasound with her one fine spring day, and it was the day we found out what sex her twins would be. To celebrate we went shopping, and I bought her a ring that was almost identical. She then surprised me by giving me her ring. I have often put it on when I feel I’m going to have a challenging day, in some way to channel her energy and strength. She is one of the most courageous women I have ever known, raising those babies so well all on her own. I feel sad that I have lost touch with her and so many other friends I made while I was living in Germany. But we’ll always have a connection in our hearts, and I have her ring to wear on tough days.

2. Describe yourself using one word for each letter of the alphabet.

A Adventurous B Brilliant C Crazy (*actual nickname*) D Desirable E Emotional F Frank G Gorgeous H HumorousI Intelligent J Jealous (sometimes) K Kinky L Loving M Motherly N Notorious O Open P Photogenic Q Quirky R Romantic S Sassy T Trouble U Unique V Voluptuous W Wonderful X X-Rated Y Young at heart Z Zealous

4. A physically unattractive man approaches you with a proposition ... I know, eye-of-the-beholder, ya-da, ya-da, ya-da ... Needless to say, you're certain he lost a fight (face-first) with his lawn tractor. He offers you $500 per day for 7 days to pose as hisgirlfriend. There’s no hanky-panky and no kissing. All you have to do is go out with him, hold his hand in front of a few people he knows, and try to make it look realistic. Would you do it? Why? Why not?

The answer to this is very simple. You should be able to tell by my second-to-last post that my world is currently being rocked by one chivalrous Prince. There would simply be NO TIME (and no desire) to pretend to be someone else’s girl. And how sad of him to have to pay someone (although that is quite a big chunk of change)… Nope, wouldn’t do it. Even if I was single.

Interview Question #5

I'm gonna do it backwards, 'cause that's the way I read newspapers & magazines too. And cause it's my blog and I can do whatever the hell I want. Heh.

5. You’ve won your fantasy vacation (all expenses paid), but you only have 15 minutes to pack and call a friend to water the plants and feed the cat while you’re gone. What are the absolute necessities that MUST go with you? You only have time to pack 20 items before the limo comes to take you to the airport,
HURRY!!! ……………… (btw, where are you going? And, do they have lots of hotties there?)

20 things I'd take with me on vacation if I only had 15 minutes to pack
1. clothes
2. underclothes
3. shoes
4. toiletries
a) cosmetics
b) shower stuff
c) sunblock
d) everything else
5. camera & film
6. music
7. player for said music
8. reading materials
9. address book
10. dear diary
11. writing/drawing utensils
12. hat
13. If there's room, rollerblades
14. money, passport
15. condoms
16. jacket
17. keys
18. sunglasses
19. vitamins
20. trusty water bottle
... and I'm out the door!!

I have gotten awfully good at packing over the years. I used to have nightmares before trips that I had overslept, forgotten to pack, and was in a mad dash out the door, stuffing my suitcase as I went. Now I have what I need in my head and *try* to be a little more organized about things. Hey, this list will come in handy as I madly pack my bag Wednesday night... (hee hee).
I'm going to the Island with 23 other girls to take a surfing lesson, visit my girl, and RELAX.

Oh, and where would I be going on this fantasy vacation? To Greece, to explore the islands and feed my very own personal hottie peeled grapes in my toga.

*my heart just did cartwheels*

There isn't any formula or method. You learn to love by loving- by paying attention and doing what one thereby discovers has to be done. -Aldous Huxley

blog it forward

I got the idea from Raspberry and Mike , two of the first bloggers I came to know in person at the very beginning (I might venture to say 'conception') of my blogging existance.

I was on a trip to Vancouver with my friend S and his friend R.
The former I met on my first journey into the whole *gasp* online dating jungle, and the former encouraged the latter to start one of his own. As he did Megan, a very talented young lady who happened to be in Rome when the Pope died the week before last. Also, the author of a online/offline column in our city's newspaper.

So (enough beating around the bush here), the idea is: present three people who you link to, and why.

Well, there's Shan, also a blogger I know 'for real', in fact we took in a photography exhibition a few weeks ago together.

And ValancyJane, who inspires me on a daily basis with her quirky outlook on life.

Theresa and Lu just plain kick ass. As I was going over there to snag the URL, I noticed that I have been posed some most interesting interview questions. I have homework to do this weekend, kiddies!

Hmmm that's three already. But there are so many more!

Miss Fee , I believe it's the furthest away, geologically. Aberdeen's resident lesbo lovin' Britney crushin gal pal. She's a riot.

As is Green Fairy , on the other side of the pond. Pretty sure she's straight. ;)

Melodee is an amazing Pastors wife with 4 kids. And this woman has me laughing my ass off, out loud, all the time.

Whew! Well, now you know some of my regulars. I think that's quite enough for now, should keep you busy for awhile. Feel free to share yours.

damn I'm good

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's Tapas Time!

Here I sit (does one sit, really, on one of these inflatable rubber balls? It's more like a bouncing/rolling motion). Depending on the music that's currently playing, that is.

Well, my first stop on this my very first unadulturated maiden voyage this year through this thing we call the web was a reggae radio station I really recommend it, btw...

But now I'm hearing the thump of Missy through from the main floor, as I abandoned my dinner plans in haste as inspiration had finally struck me.

Stay tuned as the best house sitting gig ever continues...

New Links on a Friday

It’s time for some new linkage action!

As I browse through different blogs, I write down the ones that catch my attention, and that I want to go back to when I have more time.
It’s so interesting to have a glimpse into other people’s lives, and be inspired and moved in some way.

Please check the sidebar for some newcomers (under ‘a few more’).
Welcome!

Hothouse at Sass's

Thanks to all of you who attended my party, virtually and in person.
A big shout out to the djs (you guys rock my world!)
I’d say it was a success- about 70 people passed through my door over the course of the day and night.
10 bottles of wine and various spirits were left behind.
14 empty cases of beer await a trip to the recycling depot.
The broom had to be screwed back together from limboing before we could sweep the floor.
I’m a tired but a happy camper.
And my house has been warmed.

Let the Party Begin!

And last a lifetime

Singing
there's no rain
no sorrow
only sunshine

let it shine in!
warm our hearts
heal our bodies
our spirits soar

join the dance
live the life
it is a gift

and so are you

I'm a fool for April

It's my "I don't live in the basement anymore" party!!

Actual excerpt from an email I sent around the office today:

"Happy April Everyone!

I'd like to propose a toast...

To our awesome sales this past month!
To the event that spring has sprung!

To... dare I say it?
The Love that is in the air!

I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone to come and celebrate all of the above at my housewarming party tomorrow.

I would also like to propose that we properly dispose of the pile of Big Rock product that is in the kitchen before it expires... I have the kind permission of Miss D to purchase it at a steal of a deal, and invite those of you who wish to contribute to the fund (any amount is greatly appreciated):

https://www.paypal.com/row/prq/id=OAHc6BZ.FzH18tPTXFeEP0k-XOUMzXgmae5wew

I will gladly take care of the transport and chillage.

The festivities will take place between 2 pm and 2 am at my new above ground abode at:

***********************

Feel free to bring something to bbq, I will have the marshmallows for the fire pit
."

I really wanted to have a virtual housewarming party as well, and invite all of my blogging friends to stop by and say hello, but I don't have the internet set up at home yet.

If you happen to stop by, please do leave a comment. If you live in cowtown, do send me an email & I'll tell you the address! Anyone of course is welcome to make a donation to the beer fund!!!

I will, however, endeavor to take some pics and post them early next week.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Questions 3, 4 & 5

3) If you could have any career right now (talent, money, education galore), what would you be?

I have a couple of ‘dream’ careers brewing in my head right now… Ideally, I’d like to combine them somehow, or be able to do them alternately/seasonally. I have been interested in health food/natural healing forever and I would love to get some kind of accreditation in that field. I also am interested in wine and wouldn’t mind going for a sommelier distinction. I spent a lot of years becoming fluent in French and German, so using my language skills would also have to be a part of what I do. Any ideas?

4) Beach or mountains? Or somewhere between?

I’d have to say somewhere in between- BC interior would be perfect. I absolutely love the mountains- there is something so awe inspiring and magical about them. I enjoyed every single day of the 10 months that I had the privilege of living at Emerald Lake, near Field, B.C. I was ‘healing’ from my divorce, and I swear it happened in warp speed! One of my most precious memories was getting to skate on the entire surface of the lake, as it froze and had not yet been covered by a snowfall. Absolutely breathtaking.

5) What's the last book you read?

And actually finished? The Alchemist. I have a bad habit of starting books and never finishing them. I’m still in the middle of The Life of Pi (after 3 months…), and my honey is in the middle of reading me a story about a magician’s apprentice. As for that enlightenment book, well, it kinda fell by the wayside.

Question # 2

2) What is your earliest memory?

I can remember sitting on the stone steps of our farmhouse in Quebec, all by myself. I must have been 3 years old. I remember thinking “I’m going to think back to this moment when I’m older”. I visited the farm two years ago in September on my cross country trip with Louise. It was the first time I had been back since we left in 1980. How incredible to stand in that very same spot, more than 25 years later. I have remembered that moment, and the most vivid connection I made to it was when I was a teenager, taking a personal growth seminar. They also asked this question as part of an exercise we were doing. We were to visualize that little person, and then going up to them and giving them a big hug. I think it was the first time I realized that I have that little Sassy Girl living inside of me, and that I need to take extra special care of her!

RIP, Tasha

My sister's dog died today. She has had Tasha since... forever, it seems like!
The weird thing is, she was scheduled to be put down at the vet today. This afternoon before they were about to leave, Tasha went into the living room, lay down on the carpet, and died.
She must have known, and wanted to save my 7 month pregnant sister with two little boys in tow the trouble of the trip.
You were a sweet, sweet doggie and we'll miss you.

Interview Questions from Mel (#1)

1) Describe yourself when you were fourteen.

It was 1988, the Olympics came to town. I was in Grade 8. We hosted a family from California, who gave us tickets for the Downhill events at Nakiska. I had my very first celebrity sighting at the airport, Jason Bateman. I became vegetarian that year, after reading a book about fasting of my moms that referred to meat as ‘flesh’ and that grossed me out. We had moved from the south to the north end of the city, and so I had to switch schools. I liked my new school much better, the kids were much friendlier (not rich snobs) and I made some friendships that I still have today. I remember being at a birthday party with about 10 girls, and I very spur of the moment decided I had the ability to read cards (normal playing cards). I started to read them for one of the girls, who I barely knew, and all of the sudden she reached out and slapped me! Turns out what I was saying was all ringing true for her. I don’t read cards very often anymore; although I’m sure I still could if I wanted.

My Urban Family, part 1

I feel like a brand new adoptive parent- waiting, no longing, yearning for my family existence to begin. Soon enough…

My ‘urban’ family, that is. Much has been written about this phenomenon of our new age. Clusters of close knit friends who come together and form a family unit.
Well, it looks as though my family is coming together nicely, most probably by the end of this week. All together under one roof.

I am happy to be the first one, nesting and preparing for all of their various arrivals.
Let me provide you, dear reader, with a quick recap of events thus far:

June SG signs lease with now ex bf, having broken up on moving day
July Attempted roommate situation with the little sister I never wanted
Aug Gleeful alone living time
Sept Attempt #2 at having a roomie, found A, who was a nice enough guy, but was
a) late with rent 4 out of the 5 months he lived here
b) had a penchant for cooking copious amounts of red meat and watching violent movies

This peace-loving-semi-veghead-non-tv-watching gal had problems with this.

Feb Lose A
March Move to upstairs suite

To be continued…
The inhabitants of ‘Big Sister’ get introduced.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

My fortune last night was eerily seasonally accurate:

"You will be showered with good luck"

I was out for Banana Spring rolls and coconut ice cream with my new buddy (and one of the many brides-to-be in my life right now) and that was the cherry on top of my whipped cream on top of our delicious dessert. The talk was equally as delicious- sometimes there's nothing better than some good old girl talk. Thanks, Sweetie!

So, getting back to my fortune... there WAS a naked man in my shower this morning. If THAT'S not good luck, I don't know what is!

Happy green beer drinking, everyone.

File under: Things I have never done before

I did it!
I got up and sang in front of a whole bar full of people!
And boy oh boy was it fun.
I was really not intending to take part in the Karaoke happening at the 'alternative' bar I went to with C to celebrate his bday last night. But a couple of cosmic occurences happened (a woman sat down next to me and introduced herself, and we figured out 10 minutes later that she was my neighbour, for one) and there I was, with my duet partner, T, belting it out.
We sang 'Picture', his Kid Rock to my Sheryl Crow. And it was awesome!
The crowd was very supportive, especially when they found out I was a Karaoke Virgin (hee hee) and I was terrified until about 10 seconds in... Now I can't wait to do it again!
Watch out, here I come!

Somewhere between Burgundy and Fuchsia

Somewhere where dreams are dreamt
And fantasies come true

Somewhere on this journey
Is where I’ll find you

Somewhere between midnight and dawn
Fairies and monsters and elves dwell

Somewhere between chaos and calm
Is the time to cast spells

Somewhere just beyond your imagination
Realizing the power to shock

Somewhere deep in my heart
Is where these secrets are locked

Somewhere out on a limb
Most times just out of view

Somewhere I release it all
And it all begins anew

Chocolate IS the cure

I have been feeling completely wiped out lately- since the beginning of the week. I don’t know whether it was the move, the two six day weeks back to back, the two soccer games a couple of days apart, the beautiful weather outside and me tied to this desk…
It has been incredibly hard to get out of bed all week. I lie there, listening to the stupid radio, thinking, “I could be up doing yoga, or something useful”, but no, I continue to lie there until the very last possible minute and then rush rush rush to get to work. I have a headache. I’m too hot. I’m too cold. What is wrong with me?

Malaise, I think is the word that best describes it. Yes, that’s perfect, in fact.
<1. medicine a general feeling of illness or sickness without any specific diagnostic significance 2. a general feeling of worry, discontent, or dissatisfaction, often resulting in lethargy>

On the other hand, there is a gelato shop opening up down the street from here, and they’re giving it away for free all day…

I'm on a rampage

you are violet
#EE82EE

Your dominant hues are red and blue. You're confident and like showing people new ideas. You play well with others and can be very influential if you want to be.

Your saturation level is lower than average - You don't stress out over things and don't understand people who do. Finishing projects may sometimes be a challenge, but you schedule time as you see fit and the important things all happen in the end, even if not everyone sees your grand master plan.

Your outlook on life is bright. You see good things in situations where others may not be able to, and it frustrates you to see them get down on everything.

Coming Clean

One of those moments that is so defining that you want to capture every single detail of it happening.

Bear with me, folks. I seem to have found my voice and she is not only long winded but I don’t think she’s gonna shut up anytime soon!

Bliss.

I have exactly one Sass-sized glass of 2002 Casa Lapostolle Sauvignon Blanc left from the bottle Louise and I started yesterday. Wow. Was that just yesterday? Yes, precisely one night I have spent in my new abode. In my freshly made bed. In my brand spankin’ new (to me) and CLEAN main floor home.

It was, as predicted, the easiest move ever, up from the basement in one fowl swoop. It’s now past midnight, and finally I sit, able to write in my semi set up living room. At the very least I had to flip the couch into an upright position and put the pillows back on it. C & I had left it tipped in our haste as I rushed to leave for my soccer game earlier this evening.

First I cleared away the boxes, put the filing cabinet back together, and puttered around shifting things here and there until everything was satisfactory (temporarily). To my satisfaction, that is.

I have come to the realization that not everyone shares the same opinion or standards for things. Cleanliness, for example. But let’s not go there right now.

I feel that a transformation has taken place. A huge shift. I feel like I’m finally able to exhale. Emerging from the depths of the dungeon that was my domain. Finally surfacing after enduring a long, cooped up winter (of my discontent?) with not enough oxygen or nutrients to get me by.

The time has come, the time is now. To wake up, open those blinds, clear the cobwebs, and Let The Sun Shine In! Ahem. Sorry, got a little carried away there. However, I have made an important discovery. Basement Suites. No More.

It’s like a commencement into adulthood. I had a mini stove and fridge down below, and now my regular sized appliances seem giant to me. They have inspired a late night grocery spree and visions of recipe trying and dinner parties dance in my head.

In fact, that reminds me- now is the perfect time for my honey to start redeeming his Christmas present(s): at least one meal a month chosen from recipes out of a German cookbook I gave him. Which will enable us to a) expound a little more on the culinary vocabulary in my ‘father tongue’ and b) enjoy a healthy home cooked meal together. How romantic! Well, at least that’s my goal.

Anyhoo… (I did have a point here somewhere) the extra large –to me, having gotten used to the tiny European versions of fridges my whole time in Germany- space has inspired me to fill it with nutritious food. That, and the thought of fitting into the dress I want to wear to that wedding happening in 4 weeks…

Nearly $100 expended in groceries (yes, all put away, Ainsley!) and my sweaty soccer stuff hanging triumphantly downstairs in the laundry room, a yummy glass of vino and some antipasto and stoned wheat crackers in my belly, with only 3 or 4 (ok, maybe 5) boxes left to unpack my 2nd day in… I’m ready to call it a night. Goodnight!

Write your own

I wonder what my horoscope said yesterday?

I’ll bet it was good. I had a couple of pleasant surprises happen. Three, to be precise.

“Something of great value will be returned to you”

The SATC tape, Season one, Volume one. It has been an ongoing saga for three weeks now, since A’s departure and accidental abduction of Charlotte, Miranda, Samantha and Carrie. The threats from the video store were reaching the boiling point. I was afraid we were going to hit code red: where they come and knock your door down. I was not only going to have to pay the overdue fines, but also replace the whole first season as it was rendered ‘useless’ without that very first tape. A costly misplacement of rental goods, to be sure.

But now, it would seem, things are falling nicely back in to their respective places, much like the stars. Which brings me to my second pleasant surprise:

“You will enjoy an array of culinary delights to go along with the splendid and captivating company you keep this evening”

Not only is he an incredible cook (and grandfather, from what I observed) but the man who is my love’s father taught me a whole lot about him last night.
There are many undeniable similarities between the two, yet each is distinctively different in his own way.

There was the sweet awkward bumbling politeness reminiscent of my & D’s first date. A kind, gentle, generous loving soul, prepared us an amazing feast, all the while looking after his two rambunctious granddaughters. I was treated like a princess. Which is exactly how his son does it as well. So well.

Thirdly:

“An irresistible work related opportunity presents itself; you come highly recommended”

I got an unexpected phone call from my schuh-pladdlin’ pal and gastronomy expert Helmut. He offered me a part time (every 2nd weekend) position for the front of house at the same place I helped out at for the Oktoberfest madness. He has taken over the helm and would like to gather “ein paar gute leute” to help out.

It was such a high energy, positive exchange we had- and going to hang out with gute leute (good people), doing something I swear is in my blood and can’t ever get rid of (oh yeah, and the cutting in half of my grocery bills with all the leftovers I’ll get to take home) is a no brainer. Not to mention the getting to speak German all night, wear my dirndl (I’m SUCH a girly girl) AND earn some extra dough. Sign me up!

I. AM. A REDHEAD.

Wheeee! I’m on top of the world. They should bottle this stuff and sell it. Not sure if it’s the new ‘do, the red hot valentine’s date last night, or the fact that it’s Friday but I feel great today.

Even though I have to work tomorrow (it’s only 10-3, and I have the place to myself), life is good. This feeling has eluded me for quite some time now; it’s so nice to finally bask in its gloriousness once again.

The choice of colour wasn’t really a choice, he has been wanting to turn me red for quite some time now. It was just a matter of sitting down and saying ‘do what you want’ and boom! I’m a cross between Lucille Ball and Run Lola Run! Bye bye Blondie.
Hello first day of the rest of my life.

Love Quotables

Hello Lovelies!

Happy Valentine’s Day! I have written out some thoughts that some folks have had about Love (copied from a little book fittingly given to me by one of the people I love most, Kim) and thought it a lovely way to share some of that emotion today.

I have one request: please leave a comment/send an email to me and let me know which one(s) is/are your favorites or add some of your own favorites.. I like # 1 & 9.

Go forth and love one another!

Hugs,

SG

Queer eye for THIS straight girl

Every girl needs a gay man in her life.

I have C, and I love him to bits. What other person can you have to do your hair and make up, give you fashion advice, go shopping with and not have a jealous boyfriend when he sleeps in your bed?

C & I met last year while I was working at a hotel helping a friend out who had just taken over the catering/event planning there. I lost track of him for a few months, but he resurfaced just in time to accompany me & the girls to ladies night at the cowboy bar. I had won a limo package for me and 7 friends, and the limo driver begrudgingly let C come along, although it wasn’t ‘officially’ allowed. I also had to get permission from the manager at the bar so he could sit with us in the curtained off section where the ‘action’ was going on. Free apps and drinks amidst sex toys and massage lotions for sale- he fit right in!

Currently he is in the process of moving to town and is camping out on my living room floor. My country mouse has found hisself a job in the big city, and endeavors to take over my lease in the basement when I move onwards and upwards at the end of the month. I’d have put him in the spare room, but at the moment all of my paperwork and combined contents of 3 or 4 junk drawers are inhabiting the space. Waiting for the right combination of free time and inspiration for me to sort through and organize. Baby steps!

His company has been very welcome this week, and it’s certainly nice to have someone cook, do the dishes, and deliver oreos to me on the couch. His usefulness knows no bounds- the boy actually found 5 channels on my tv the other day (I never turn the darned thing on) when he was home alone and bored. Can you imagine the squeal of delight he let forth upon discovering that ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’ was on? It was sweet. And so is he. The End.

Moving up in the World

There’s really no other place to go when you live in a basement suite is there?

Over 8 months I have been held captive down here, since the lease-and-heart-breaker known as my ex b-friend and I split.

So conveniently located within walking distance of the institution of higher learning His Flakiness had ‘planned’ on attending.

Our house, in the middle of our street, is quite charming. Out of the 50’s it must be, quite the square box of a thing. The lovingly renovated downstairs has not served too terribly badly as my humble abode these past months.

It’s more the unfortunate forced company I was made to keep (had to get a roommate to help with rent), and the general lack of light that hindered me from fully enjoying my time here.

Outright avoidance is what it actually turned into in the last weeks and days of A & I’s shared living experience. I once drove down the alley, saw his car parked out back and kept driving to the local Starbucks to enjoy my tea and book in peace. My peace loving Veggie sensibilities were constantly offended by his cooking and consuming large amounts of red meat and enjoyment of violent movies.

It was a clash in lifestyles and a somewhat cramped space that didn’t quite accommodate our collective possessions. Most of his were stored in the tiny garage, already populated by the landlord’s perfectly restored orange ’74 Volkswagen Beatle.

After being late paying his share of the rent 4 out of the 5 months he lived there, my angelic (albeit stupiodic – new word) patience had finally run out. I’m usually a “you get 2 chances and that’s it!” kinda girl, and it was time for self preservation mode to kick in. Sorely overdue. But how can you kick a poor dude who just graduated and was struggling to start his own business out- especially around Christmas time?? Especially one who came out to watch my soccer game and didn’t complain when we roped him into being linesman?

Sod it! The bugger had to get out! (Why is it so much fun sometimes just to go British?)
Anyhoo, long story short, A left, the upstairs is becoming vacant next week; I have had it living underground and have decided to seize this opportunity by the horns.

$100 more a month (assuming I have a solid new roomie in place in 3 weeks) for more light, more space, hardwood throughout AND a dishwasher? Not to mention all of the cute/quirky details- original ceilings, door archways and mantle. How cool is that?

So I have solidified myself a flat mate (sorry, had to!) and on the 1st day of the next blessed month I will officially be an above ground dweller! Along with one of my brothers-from-another-mother, R. No fooling, I bonded with this guy immediately and magically upon meeting him. Don’t know why I should be at all surprised, as I met him through his current roomie, my Kitty Kat (and soul mate from another life). Bottom Line: Gotta keep the family together!

Can’t wait till my “I don’t live in the bloody basement anymore Party!”
Cheers to that!

The Trip

Let me take you to my secret place
No one but strangers can come
Tucked in down deep
Let yourself become enveloped in the darkness
The scent like waves washes over you
You become too tired to stay awake
Let go, trust me
I want to hold you while you dream
And be there when you wake
So you can tell me where you've been

I really like my horoscope this month

Generally speaking, this will be a great year for you. This month is no exception. In love, make sure that trust is the glue between you and your guy. You are inspired by an idea whose time will come. Develop your concept, learn what you need to and you will fly away on the wings of your brilliance.
